The 2014 USA Hockey Girls’ Select 15 Player Development Camp began its first day of games on July 21 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The camp competition opened with a 3-2 win by Team Blue over Team Black in game one on July 21. Team Blue skated to a 2-0 lead in the first period with markers by Tristen Truax and Elizabeth Gross. Team Black rallied in the second with goals by Gabriela Jones and Mallorie Iozzo, while Team Blue’s Truax posted the game winner late in the second period.
In game two, Team Gold captured a 10-2 victory over Team Grey. Kathryn Denecke turned in an epic performance in the contest with six goals and one assist in the winning effort for Team Gold. Megan Roe also had two goals for Team Gold, while teammates Charlotte Welch added four assists and Catherine Skaja had three assists. Taylor Wente and Natalie Wasielewski each scored goals for Team Grey in game.
The first day of action was completed with a 4-1 win by Team Red over Team Green. Joie Phelps gave Team Green a 1-0 lead in the first period before Team Red scored four unanswered goals in the final 28 minutes of play. Team Red goals were scored by Crystalyn Hengler, Brittyn Fleming, Athena Song and Alison Rodgers. Team Red’s goalie pair of Kate Froling and Elizabeth Hanson each combined for 25 saves and the victory in the nets.
The eighth annual Hockey Weekend Across America, presented by CCM, will be staged nationwide Feb. 20-22. More information on the celebration will be coming in the weeks and months ahead.
