Girls Select 15: Day Three Recap

Day 3 at the 2014 USA Hockey Girls’ Select 15 Player Development Camp opened with a 1-1 deadlock between Team Black and Team Grey. Taylor Wente scored the lone goal for Team Grey in the second period, while Team Black’s Jesse Compher tied the game late in the second period with her goal. In the nets, Caitlin Walker and Hayley Kliczko turned aside 17 shots for Team Black, while Team Grey’s goalie pair of Kailee Medved and Mary Elizabeth Ostrande combined for 23 saves in the game.

In game two, Team Green earned a 3-2 win over Team Gold. Cayla Barnes and Sophia Slattery opened the offense for Team Green, and Joie Phelps scored the game winner later in the second period. Emma Jurusik and Megan Roe each posted markers for Team Gold in the contest.

Competition ended on July 23 with a 4-3 victory by Team Red over Team Blue. Team Blue’s Michaela Boyle broke the ice early in the second period with a goal to make it 1-0. Team Red then rallied with four unanswered goals by Kaitlyn BlumbergAlison Rodgers, Natalie Heising and Sharon Frankel to bring home the win in the second period. Kate Froling and Elizabeth Hanson combined for 25 saves in the contest for Team Red.

The final day of the camp on July 24 will feature “tournament” games beginning at 8:45 a.m. Seeds 5 and 6 will play on Rink 1 at 8:45 a.m., while Seeds 3 and 4 will play on Rink 2 at 9 a.m. The top two seeded teams will play in the final game of the day at 10:15 a.m. on Rink 1.

The eighth annual Hockey Weekend Across America, presented by CCM, will be staged nationwide Feb. 20-22. More information on the celebration will be coming in the weeks and months ahead.
