Girls Select 14: Day Three Recap

This year’s USA Hockey Girls’ Select 14 Player Development Camp’s game competition came to a conclusion on July 23 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, which is located on the campus of St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn. 

In game one on July 23, Team Red scored a 3-2 win over Team Gold. Team Red’s McKenzie Haberl, Kaitlyn Rippon and Zoe VanDekieft all scored first period goals to gain the winning margin. In the final 28:00 of play, Team Gold got on the board with goals by Abby Latorella and .

In game two, Team White charted a 4-3 win over Team Black. Samantha Smigliani scored in the first to give Team Black a 1-0 lead. In the second period, Team White’s Morgan Shines tied the game at 1-1 before Team Black’s Megan Jacobs and Audrey McMahon posted goals to regain a 3-1 lead. The game ended with three unanswered goals by Team White’s Kirsten Goode, Kelly Browne and Sommer Ross. In the nets, Team White’s Abigail Levy had 32 saves in the first period, while teammate Phoebe Autio completed the game with 12 saves.

The day was completed with a 0-0 draw between Team Green and Team Blue.  Taylor Stadelli and Gwyneth Phillips combined for 23 saves and the shutout for Team Blue, while Team Green’s Kristin Smith and Lindsay Reed posted 25 saves and also earned the shutout.

The final day of the camp on July 24 will feature cross ice competition starting at 7 a.m.

Rippon led the camp’s scoring leaders with four points (2G, 2A) in three games.

The eighth annual Hockey Weekend Across America, presented by CCM, will be staged nationwide Feb. 20-Feb. 22. Much more information on the celebration will be coming in the weeks and months ahead.
